Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

"Our goal with this resource section is to provide a path to information on safety, security, and professional development that's both informative and evolving over time."

Rory Peck Trust has created a series of resource pages featuring topics relevant to freelance journalists. The online resources are expanding and new topics are being introduced regularly. This is intended to be an ongoing resource for freelancers, and the Trust is eager to hear from the freelance community about it.

As of June 2014, topics include:

  • Digital Security, for example: "How can I use encryption?", explaining encryption and including methods to encrypt: email; computer live chats via instant messaging; computer-based calling; websites visited; cloud computer storage and computer-based file storage; and mobile phones.
  • East Africa Journalists in Exile, including, for example: "Getting Support"; "The Refugee Process"; and "Your Security".
  • Insurance, including, for example: "Getting the right insurance"; "Types of Coverage"; and "Key Issues and Questions to Ask."
  • Safety & Security, including, "Types of Safety Training" and "Risk Assessment", which covers, for example: "Creating Your Communications Plan" and "Putting together a Proof of Life document".
  • Professional Development, including, for example: "Negotiation and Best Practice: What's a fair rate?" and "Freelance Finance".

Rory Peck Trust also produces online webinars using Youtube and Google On Air Hangouts. In collaboration with Frontline Freelance Register and the Frontline Club, the Trust was part of a series of videos called "Safetystream." These were live panel discussions on freelancer safety practices (see the example below), accessible both through the Rory Peck trust resources pages and through Frontline Freelance Register's website.
