Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Rory Peck Awards

Freelance cameramen and camerawomen from around the world are invited to submit entries for the Rory Peck Awards, which honour the best freelance footage in news and current affairs, especially in regions where it is difficult to operate as a news gatherer.

The Rory Peck Award for News:

This award honours freelance camerawork in the coverage of a news event where the focus is on the immediacy of the story.  Rushes and un-voiced pieces are accepted in this category.  Maximum duration: 10 minutes.
 
The Rory Peck Awards for Features:

This award honours freelance camerawork in news and current affairs features: in-depth pieces that look beyond the immediacy of a news story. Maximum duration: 60 minutes.
 
The Sony Professional Impact Award:

This award honours freelance camerawork in either news or current affairs that raises humanitarian issues and the broadcast of which has had an international impact or contributed to a change in perception or policy. Maximum duration: 60 minutes.

In all categories the awards recognise:

  • quality of camerawork
  • individual endeavour and initiative
  • journalistic ability and integrity
Application Info

Applicants must be self-employed camera operators who regularly work for more than one employer but are not permanently employed. Submissions must include work that has been broadcast by news media between June 1 2012 and May 31 2013.
