Addressing Sexual Violence and HIV in Department of Correctional Services: A Guide for Working with Members of the Department of Correctional Services

This guide was produced to build the capacity of Department of Correctional Services (DCS) members to address inmate vulnerabilities to HIV and sexual abuse in South Africa's prisons. Developed by Just Detention International (JDI) and Sonke Gender Justice Network (Sonke), and funded by the Open Society Foundation of South Africa, it is intended to be used in workshop settings as a resource and facilitation guide for those working on issues of gender, HIV, sexual violence, and prisons.
The main purpose of this guide is to build skills and capacity of trainees who will be responsible for facilitating skills development for others and who will be developing programmes that will contribute to change in South Africa's correctional centres. It is designed to foster positive action and change and empower participants to become change agents in their own lives and in the correctional centres in which they work.
The guide contains the following chapters:
- Overview
- Accompanying power points slides
- Background information
- Acronyms and glossary
- Being a facilitator
- Day 1- Gender and HIV basics
