The Communication Initiative

After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. 

Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future. 

On the transfer, co-founder Victoria Martin expressed her pleasure to see this work continue under Wits' leadership, knowing that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction. 

As Wits, we honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades and look forward building from that strong base. This includes co-founders Warren Feek (1953-2024) and Victoria Martin as well as La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA), which continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com with links to The CI Global site. We are also eager to forge new partnerships and entertain new ideas as we consider how best to contribute to social and behaviour change in our rapidly evolving environment.

If you are joining the International Social and Behaviour Change Communication (SBCC) Summit in Panama, please join Wits and CILA on Monday, 22 June, to share your thoughts and suggestion for the relaunch of the Communication Initiative. We will be in Pacifica 5 from 12-1:25 for the Refuel, Reflect, and Renew Lunch Series: The Communication Initiative: celebrating a driving force for Communication for Social Change and the way forward. We will reflect on the legacy of Warren Feek and family in creating the Communication Initiative, consider the contributions of CI over the years and then turn our attention towards the future in this dynamic session.

Radio Sagarmatha es una radio comunitaria independiente, administrada por periodistas ambientalistas. Su cobertura incluye todo el valle de Katmandú, llegando a una población de más de 1.5 millones de personas.

Metodología de la evaluación
Los radioescuchas son invitados a comunicar por teléfono sus necesidades de información o sus necesidades de ayuda con computadores; personal del estudio consulta Internet para responder al aire las preguntas. Hay también emisiones en vivo sobre los principales eventos sobre TICs que tengan lugar en Katmandú. En Marzo 2002, se inició un concurso radial, que tiene lugar cada 15 días. Los ganadores son recompensados con capacitación gratis en TICs, auspiciada por corporaciones privadas.

Resultados de la evaluación
Se creó una colección de casi 50 horas de audio sobre temas relacionados con Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (TICs). Más de 50 expertos han compartido sus experiencias en la radio y muchos jóvenes han venido a compartir en el aire sus aventuras en Internet.

El concurso de radio ha inspirado el crecimiento en un 200% en el número de cartas y correos-e. A medida que el programa ha progresado, la emisora ha recibido un creciente número de pedidos de información específica acerca de TICs. Ha recibido también más preguntas relacionadas con los computadores; por ejemplo, preguntas sobre cómo arreglar problemas de los equipos y de los programas.

Debido en parte a la total automatización de la operación de la emisora Sagarmatha, el programa des-mitificó la tecnología a los productores y técnicos de la estación. Cuando se inició el programa, había un solo computador, pero ahora hay diez. Muchos programas son grabados y emitidos directamente de los computadores en formato MP3. Los archivos diarios de las emisiones son también grabados en CD-ROMs, en formato MP3. El gerente de una ISP local, ITNTI, le dio a la estación radial acceso gratuito a la red y al correo-e, después de asistir al estudio para una entrevista.Radio Sagarmatha ha dado origen a cinco estaciones comunitarias en diferentes partes de Nepal.
