Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Journal of Community Informatics

SummaryText
This journal aims to empower communities with information on Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) that can help them achieve their objectives and overcome the "digital divide." The journal seeks to provide information that empowers communities and citizens in the range of ICT applications including health, cultural production, civic management and e-governance. It seeks to reach traditionally excluded populations and communities, and provide information that supports local economic development, social justice and political empowerment using the Internet.

Published four times a year, each issue contains a number of double blind peer-reviewed research articles as well as commentaries by leading Community Informatics (CI) practitioners and policy makers. The Journal provides open access and an open archive for all of its content based on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. It seeks to reach a global readership including a broad range of academics, CI practitioners and national and multi-lateral policy makers.

Subscriptions are free. Two e-mail discussion lists are available to individuals interested in Community Informatics as well.
