Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Improving Agricultural Extension

SummaryText
In the context of sustainable agricultural development, agricultural extension has a role to play in systematically identifying farmers' problems and needs, and helping formulate agricultural research agendas based on these needs. In this context, the body of knowledge on agricultural extension can only be expanded.

This publication, which is the third edition of a reference manual that was previously published in 1973 and 1984, offers a critical review and inventory-analysis of the "state of the art" in agricultural extension theory and best practices. It was prepared under a contract between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Program for Agricultural Knowledge System (INTERPAKS), College of Agricultural, Consumer, and Environmental Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, United States. It was published in 1997 and reprinted in 1998. The 220-page publication features 38 authors, who include extension practitioners, educators, and scholars, from 15 countries. The book is aimed at agricultural extension planners, managers, trainers, educators, and field practitioners. Its purpose is to improve the quality of agricultural extension and to generate new ideas and methods for increasing the cost-effectiveness of agricultural extension programmes.
