As of March 15 2025, The Communication Initiative (The CI) platform is operating at a reduced level, with no new content being posted to the global website and registration/login functions disabled. (La Iniciativa de Comunicación, or CILA, will keep running.) While many interactive functions are no longer available, The CI platform remains open for public use, with all content accessible and searchable until the end of 2025.
Please note that some links within our knowledge summaries may be broken due to changes in external websites. The denial of access to the USAID website has, for instance, left many links broken. We can only hope that these valuable resources will be made available again soon. In the meantime, our summaries may help you by gleaning key insights from those resources.

Local, national, and international development requires impact evidence. Measuring and reporting the impact of the social, cultural, and personal dynamics related to development challenges - for example, community engagement strategies on health issues or media engagement on democracy and governance questions, is extremely difficult (understatement!).
Credible data requires credible research methodologies. How the data is collected and analysed is subject to scrutiny by people both within and outside the communication and media for development/social and behavioural change field. Those outside our field, such as economists and epidemiologists, can be particularly harsh!
The past few years have seen some developments related to research methodologies for communication and media for development/social and behavioural change. There has been a substantive attempt to implement an RCT design (Burkina Faso). Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) has been used for a major research initiative on how households make health decisions (Nigeria). Revelados (Colombia) and Soul City (South Africa) have developed innovative approaches to evaluating impact. There is much more going on. This is just a small slice.
Hosted by our Partner BBC Media Action (who have extensive research capacity and action), The Communication Initiative is convening a one-day meeting on March 16 2015 to discuss and debate credible methodologies for research on communication and media for development/social and behavioural change themes. The event will be at the BBC in London.
For now this is a "hold the date" note! But...

2. If you have suggestions for the agenda - issues that could provide a specific focus for the event and/or good examples that could be outlined for critical review - please also let me know. We welcome all input.
3. We wish to ensure that this event has a strong diversity of voices and perspectives. Travel can be difficult for many people and organisations that are not close to the meeting venue. Should you have the ability to provide support for someone outside the UK to attend, please let me know. We can then discuss who and "match you up" if required.
