The Communication Initiative
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Creative Use of ICT in Public Libraries

Supported by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this award for Creative Use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in public libraries is the sixth call in the EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries) Open Access innovation awards programme for public and community libraries in developing and transition countries. The prize includes US$1,500 and publicity through EIFL's global communication channels and networks. This award will recognise libraries that are using ICT in creative (new, unusual, non-traditional and imaginative ideas that meet community needs) ways to improve lives.

Application Info

The call for submissions is open to all public and community libraries in developing and transition countries.

To enter the competition, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • must be a public or community library;
  • the library must be in a transition or developing country;
  • must use information and communication technology (ICT) to implement the service ;
  • the service should have started after January 2010; and
  • the service must be operational at the time of application.
