Development action with informed and engaged societies
As of March 15 2025, The Communication Initiative (The CI) platform is operating at a reduced level, with no new content being posted to the global website and registration/login functions disabled. (La Iniciativa de Comunicación, or CILA, will keep running.) While many interactive functions are no longer available, The CI platform remains open for public use, with all content accessible and searchable until the end of 2025.

Condom Shirt Raises Awareness of AIDS

Summary

This Express.co.uk online news article is about a shirt created by an Indian clothing designer who used condoms in the collar and condoms stitched to the fabric to raise awareness of AIDS. According to the article, M. A. Rahman, aged 28, who designed the shirt, sent it to the United Nations (UN) Secretary General to act as a reminder to people to carry out safe sex.

Using 1,025 condoms in each Kurta shirt, a traditional Indian shirt, Mr. Rahman hoped that the shirt design would encourage people to think about protection against unsafe sex. He received recognition and thanks from the UN, as well as media publicity in which he quoted recent (2009) statistics on the AIDS epidemic: "AIDS has killed more than 25 million people so far and an estimated 33.2 million people worldwide live with HIV. The world needs more awareness campaign for the protection from this deadly virus."
