Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This manual provides an overview of communications with a special emphasis on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in South Africa. It is part of a broader effort to encourage deeper involvement in action around HIV/AIDS and to create effective, long-term solutions to the epidemic. In 1997/98 the HIV/AIDS Directorate of the Department of Health commissioned a Beyond Awareness communications campaign that included a range of activities that were dedicated to forming a solid foundation for AIDS action. These included this manual as well as a catalogue of AIDS materials available nationally, a series of multilingual leaflets on key topics, and several other materials.

Printed and published by the Beyond Awareness Consortium comprising the Community Agency for Social Enquiry (C.A.S.E.), Dramaide, Society for Family Health, Soul City, and Ulwazi Educational Radio Project, supported by AIDS Media Research Project (AMREP) and Siyakha Communications.
