Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) created this television series covering government programmes that facilitate job creation, skills development, access to credit, and business development. Azishe - Ke: Opportunity Knocks! was part of a communication campaign on economic opportunities that aimed to bring information to the people.
Communication Strategies

Azishe Ke: Opportunity Knocks! consisted of 13 episodes broadcast on Saturday mornings on SABC 2. The core content included different projects that the government had launched in an effort to change people's lives. It featured real stories of initiatives in which people have been trained to do different jobs and received helped in starting businesses. The government hoped thereby to work with media to reach more people, especially the economically poor, and to show them how they can take advantage of government-created opportunities to improve their lives.

Specifically, the programme showed what Expanded Public Works Programme projects like Working for Water and road construction can do to empower people. It also looked at government support for black-owned hotels, promotion of small business opportunities through the Umsobomvu Youth Fund, gender and women's empowerment, the National Development Agency, and the School Nutrition Programme.
