Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Alternatives & Processes for Social Participation - Mexico

Alternatives and Processes for Social Participation (Alternativas y Procesos de Participation Social) is a non-profit public service organisation that promotes the development of families, groups and communities from the poorest and most marginalized rural regions of Mexico. It began its work in 1980, pushing for rural development programmes in marginalized communities of the Mixteca region, and has its central office in Tehuacán.
Communication Strategies
The Water Forever Programme encourages people to participate in forwarding their own development. People collaborate in the improvement of their own quality of life, by increasing the water available to them for diverse uses and improving the quality of their cultivated lands. In 1996, Alternatives launched the School of Cooperative Financing (Eficoop), offering education and training in the development of cooperative businesses. Since the beginning of this programme, Alternatives has aligned itself closely with popularly promoted civilian organisations in 6 different states in order to promote a system of education for rural development which supports selected methods of production with adequate financial services.
Development Issues
Community participation, population, and the environment.
Key Points
In 1984, Alternatives established the Center for Technology whose goal is to generate and validate appropriate technology for rural communities. The technology covers different needs, from production to domestic life in order to make the labor of rural women easier. This center has facilitated the technical development of the three parts of the amaranth programme: agriculture, industry and commerce, and the water programme.

Similarly, Alternatives has assisted many organisations which create financing mechanisms for the production activities of rural families, groups, and villages. It has helped to generate savings funds, revolving funds, security funds, co-investment funds and other novel means of rural financing which avoid problems of excessive or inadequate debt.
