Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

"In 2018, [CIVICUS'] 'reimagining democracy' theme focuses on current challenges to democratic freedoms and democratic practice around the world, and civil society’s work to make democracy real."

This web resource from CIVICUS assembles multiple ways, of collecting civil society views, including commissioned perspectives, open submissions, interviews, creative expressions and reports from democracy dialogues, available in English, Spanish, and French.

Sections are the following:

  • Stories from the frontlines includes "[c]ase studies from different countries of challenges encountered, civil society action to realise democratic freedoms and improve democratic practices, and lessons learned." Countries include, among others, Congo, Denmark, Nigeria, Canada, Tanzania, Ireland, and Palestine, along with the province of Quebec and the continent of Asia.

  • "Overviews" presents key themes such as feminist agendas, populism and human rights, and global citizen participation at the United Nations (UN).

  • Democracy Dialogues includes short reports from informal and interactive group sessions, convened by CIVICUS members, on key aspects of reimagining democracy in different contexts. Guidelines are available with reports for 2018 listed by country.

  • "Interviews" are"[i]n-depth conversations with civil society activists and leaders about their work to promote democratic freedoms and better democratic practice, the challenges they encounter and the victories they score."

  • "Video Interviews" include "[s]Sort videos showcasing activists’ responses to two basic questions: what isn’t working with democracy where you are? And what can you do about it?" Interviewees include Beatriz Zùñiga, Diana Pèrez, Mae Boeve, Vani Catanisiga, Alex Farrow, Deewa Dela Cruz, Melissa Embriaco, Roselle Rasay, Soo Yun Suh, Tamani Rarama, David del Olmo, Bianka Rodrìguez, and Walter Corzo.

  • "Youth Artivism" showcases "critical ideas, perspectives and hopes about democracy, participation and inclusion in written, graphic, audiovisual and musical form," including links to art, writing, and video, and South Africa Youth Day Symposium winners.
