Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

This is a 5-year rural development programme funded by USAID.
Communication Strategies
Gobi News Magazine - a free, bilingual magazine for "Gobi citizens seeking a better understanding about living in a market economy and looking for tools to use to prosper in that economy with business and economic news and information that is educational, practical, thought-provoking, and relevant." They publish 40,000 copies of this free, bilingual magazine every eight weeks, and plan to increase publication frequency to every six weeks in early 2001.
Gobi Business News radio — In March, 2000, they expanded this 10-minute, nationally broadcast programme to 15 minutes. Targeting herders eager to improve their business activities by using reliable business and economic information, the twice-weekly, regularly updated programme which airs on Mongol Radio features two (and recently, a temporary third) components: Market Watch, Weather Watch, and Zud Watch.
Gobi Wave Information Center — Officially registered as an NGO at the Ministry of Justice, this former Umnugovi Aimag government-run organization reports, produces, and broadcasts more than 100 minutes of original programming per week via longwave radio transmissions to a potential 300,000 listeners spanning all or parts of six Gobi aimags.
Business & Economic Information Training & Production - they have provided training to journalists, and NGO leaders on improving regional information systems, core market economic principles, and business and economic journalism. Publications and manuals from these trainings are available free of charge to the general public of the Gobi.
Development Issues
Economic Development.
Key Points
All the business and economic articles, stories, handbooks, and publications are available for use by Gobi people, as well as by others across Mongolia. In addition, Gobi people are encouraged to produce and disseminate their own business information pieces. They will provide feedback, make every effort to reproduce and disseminate these pieces using our own contacts and channels, and advocate for their production, dissemination, and use nationwide. Gobi Wave's mission is to provide listeners in the region with news and information that is relevant and useful. Listeners are encouraged to provide Gobi Wave with news stories as well as with constructive criticism and feedback
