Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Summary

According to this article, officials from schools, public health departments, police, and emergency management agencies in Benton County, Oregon, United States, met in August 2007 to plan a multi-agency response to a possible pandemic flu outbreak. Members who attended the meeting discussed the importance of having a detailed plan in place before a pandemic or avian flu occurs. Communication, in particular, was identified as a key element of a pandemic flu plan. Officials discussed the importance of keeping the lines of communication between agencies and the public open and effective.

According to the article, there are already some collaborative plans in place to deal with an outbreak of pandemic or avian influenza. In the case of school closures, some schools would use an automated phone system to call the homes of every student. Media outlets and the district website would also be used to inform the public about what to do in the event of an outbreak.
