Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

This reference guide is intended as a resource for professional communicators and public educators who work in non-school settings. Such public "engagement" professionals may use it to stimulate behaviour change, to understand the theories and models that underlie their professional practice, or to gain insight on how to apply these theories in practice. Those who conduct evaluations or whose work is being evaluated on the basis of changes in behaviours of a target audience may also find it useful.

As stated in the book's Introduction: "A ...range of research information relates to changing people’s behaviours. This information, however, is rarely distilled for the non-specialist user, and often the language in the professional literature is directed toward other academics who are already familiar with it. This reference guide is an attempt to level the playing field by providing background so that the practitioner can both access the literature and put it to use. This reference guide’s resources span learning, communication, and behavior-change theories and models...."
