Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The main focal point of the Fundación Centro Internacional de Educación y Desarrollo Humano (CINDE)/International Center of Education and Human Development is on promoting the creation of an appropriate environment for the integral development of children and youth living in conditions of vulnerability in Colombia, Latin America, and the world, through work with families, communities, and educational institutions.

Communication Strategies

Among the advocacy activities of CINDE is the dissemination of information and experiences that contribute to strengthening the capacity of civil society and States in the construction and development of policies and programmes for children. It serves as a a centre for research and sustainable development, which influences the formulation and operalisation of policies in favour of integral development for the promotion and implementation of the rights of children and youth.

 

Some of its programmes for early childhood are:

 

  • Growing Family Programme: a training for parents and others interested in improving their skills for raising children.
  • Learn to Learn Programme: a school-based approach that aims improve the quality of education in preschool and elementary school, encouraging children through games and cognitive impact on their motivation to learn.
  • Play and Learn to Think Programme: for parents, educators, and adults in charge of children from 2 years and younger, designed to develop in children the potential of logical thinking, creativity, and self-concept, as well as improve interactions of adults with children.
  • Children and Young Peacebuilders Programme: Part of the search for the root cause of violence in Colombia and for solutions, this initiative is designed to express the voice and words of children and young people. It seeks to understand how they perceive violence and, then, to develop an educational process aimed at empowering them to develop their potential emotional, communicative, creative, ethical, and political thinking on the issue.

Key Points

The Foundation CINDE is an organisation founded in 1977 in Colombia, based in the cities of Bogota, Medellin, and Manizales, Colombia. It is the Latin American headquarters of the Consultative Group on Care and Early Childhood Development, Centre for UNESCO [United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization] Cooperating with Children and Family work, and serves as the Technical Secretariat of the Early Childhood Advisory Group Network in Latin America.
