Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Because I am a Girl: Youth Summary 2010

SummaryText
The Plan International project "Because I am a Girl 2010" offers a youth-friendly summary of the State of the World's Girls 2010 report, with a special focus on street girls and cyberspace. It was created in collaboration with Plan's Youth Advisory Panel.
The report focuses on two areas of change that present girls with both opportunities and risk - cities and technologies. It presents facts and figures in brief to alert youth to the advantages and disadvantages of the context in which they live and to a more global picture of the state of girls. It includes the "Street Girls' Manifesto", in which adolescent girls from shelters in 7 countries express what are their rights, what they have identified as ways that communities and governments can make them safe, and what regional- and global-level actions are needed to protect street children, supported by articles from the United Nations (UN) Child Rights Convention (CRC). The summary draws on the CRC to demonstrate the extent to which the rights of girls living on the street are being violated and offers young people a chance to speak up on their behalf and take action.

The digital revolution and the digital divide section includes why technology is good for girls, what stops them from engaging with it, and how it can be harmful. It includes Plan's child protection online safety rules.
