After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Developing Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) Materials (Jan 13-24 2014)

This 10-day intensive course is designed to provide training in the creative design process for Social and Behavior Change Communication (SBCC) materials from the strategy/creative brief to final materials. The course addresses both theoretical and practical aspects of materials development and will include an introduction to the design process, how to plan a multi-media SBCC campaign, and an introduction to designing print materials, social media, TV/video, and radio programme for health communication, including pretesting of SBCC materials. The course is being organised by the Department of Journalism & Communication, Makerere University, in collaboration with African Network for Strategic Communication in Health and Development (AfriComNet).

Course objectives are to:

  • familiarise participants with the creative process for developing SBCC materials from the creative brief/strategy to final materials;
  • build skills of participants to design effective SBCC materials for print, radio, TV, and new media in various formats;
  • teach participants how to integrate new media/social media messages into existing and SBCC programming; and
  • empower participants to manage the production processes and relationships with ad agencies in designing effective SBCC materials.

Deadline date: December 1, 2013
The course is designed for health communication professionals and programme staff with prior training in strategic communication, who are involved in health and development communication materials development at local, national and/or international levels. The cost of the course is UGX 1,035,500 which covers course materials, breakfast and lunch, and refreshments.
