Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Middle East e-Learning Association (MEEA)

Launched on February 1 2010, the Middle East e-Learning Association (MEEA) is a regional independent, non-political, non-profit association established for the purpose of expanding the understanding, practice, and knowledge transfer of e-learning in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. MEEA was created by Hamdan Bin Mohammed e-University (HBMeU) and is supported by several international organisations.
Communication Strategies

MEEA is a network drawing on both in-person activities and information and communication technology (ICT) to openly share e-learning know-how and e-learning solutions. It creates various collaborative means for the sharing of best practice applications in e-learning and supports the MEEA membership group with their quest for developing, enhancing, and impacting with e-learning.

MEEA's activities in the region include:

  • Networking and information sharing: Membership to MEEA brings access to a network of leaders, experts, and practitioners in the field of e-learning from various parts of the world. It allows for interaction through working groups, meetings, and seminars and gives members the opportunity to exchange knowledge and contribute overall to the development of e-learning both regionally and internationally. MEEA establishes relationships and partnerships with e-learning associations and educational institutions from other parts of the world. It also develops links and establishes relationships with key regional government bodies and other education bodies.
  • Raising awareness on e-learning-related topics through regional road shows, conferences, publications, and a periodic newsletter that highlights news, activities, and initiatives undertaken by the association as well as those of its members.
  • Strategy and policy development: MEEA develops policies, procedures, and practices with respect to the design, development, and implementation of e-learning curricula.
  • Establishment of special interest groups: MEEA develop protocols to support the operation and communication of such groups and promotes special interest group opportunities.
  • Design of professional development programmes: MEEA conducts regular training assessment needs for the region in relation to e-learning and establishes professional and educational programmes in the field of e-learning which are designed to respond to the needs of the MENA region.
  • Establishment of awards to recognise excellence in various practices of e-learning in the Arab World. These awards include: The Best Research Paper tackling the implementation of e-Learning in the Arab World Award, The Best Designed e-Learning Course (both corporate and academic sector) Award, and Individual Outstanding Achievement in e-Learning Award.
  • Research and dissemination of research outcomes by publishing reports, newsletters, and articles in journals and profession magazines, as well as the interactive MEEA website, where the resources section features MEEA reports, minutes of meetings, best practices and case studies, e-learning sites, e-learning events, e-learning associations and networks, e-learning journals and magazines, and open educational resources.
