Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention of the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and Sony Corporation invite youth 12-18 years of age to enter the Photo Pledge for Children's Rights Youth Award competition. The initiative is calling people around the globe to pledge their support to children’s rights by submitting a single image which portrays one of five fundamental rights of a child:

  1. a childhood
  2. be educated
  3. be healthy
  4. be treated fairly
  5. be heard

The selected 6 young photographers - one from each of the 6 continents of the world - will receive the following:

A two-day trip to Cannes, France, during the Sony World Photography Awards and World Photography Festival, April 22-27 2010, where they will:

  • Experience the Festival - outdoor photography exhibitions by artists from around the world, film screenings, student programmes, and more.
  • Be mentored by World Photography Academy Members, spend a day learning about photography, and get to know the other young photographers in the programme.
  • Be welcomed onto the Cannes stage to receive the award from photographer and humanitarian Reza and a UNICEF Ambassador.

And: A special UNICEF field trip, organised by Sony’s EYE SEE programme to partake in a 5-day photographic workshop with mentoring from Reza.
