Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Sahafa Club

Sahafa is an online platform that aims to support freedom of expression and professional development and exchange of information amongst Palestinian journalists. Sahafa Club is a project of the Birzeit University Media Development Center in cooperation with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Ramallah Office. Their goal is to increase knowledge and encourage dialogue within the Palestinian media so that these professionals can discuss and share ideas, skills, and experiences.
Communication Strategies

The Sahafa Club website offers media professionals information on capacity building and job opportunities, grants, events, professional news, and media research. For example, the "publications" section includes summaries of, and links to, resources such as the "BBC News Style Guide", "The Media Self-Regulation Handbook", "The Principles on Freedom of Expression and Privacy", "World Press Trends", free novel-writing software, guidance for journalistic ethical dilemmas, and so on. The "useful contacts" and "discussion forums" pages are designed to facilitate dialogue and networking on such topics as the draft of the "Code of Conduct for Media Professionals in Palestine". Sahafa Club also welcomes the submission of events, courses, and programmes from the media departments of Palestinian universities. The Sahafa site features the contact details of point persons at these academic centres, to the end of facilitating networking.

Sahafa provides information about training courses as well as upcoming and past events on press freedom. For example, a posting describing an August 20 2009 workshop in Ramallah provides the gist of the panel discussion organised by the Arabic Media Internet Network (AMIN) and the Geneva Centre for Democratic Controls. In the presence of a number of Palestinian media and journalists, Nicolas Mason of the Geneva Centre introduced the basic principles on free access to information, and stimulated a discussion between attendees about their experiences of being denied access to information, the challenges of investigative journalism related to corruption in both public and private sectors, the difficulty of finding newspapers willing to publish reports on "taboo issues", etc.
