Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Toolkit: Disseminating Research Online

SummaryText

This toolkit provides tips and practical suggestions for communicating academic research using the internet. It draws on best practice for web strategies from the information and commercial worlds, especially selected to help make electronic dissemination of research more successful. This toolkit does not intend to cover everything needed for a comprehensive research dissemination  strategy for institutes, but rather looks at how people use the internet and what this means for designing writing to be read online. It draws together advice from web communication professionals and provides external links.

It contains five sections:

  • "Successful online communication - This section looks at how people use the internet and what this means for designing writing to be read online. It draws together advice from leading web communication experts and provides useful external links.
  • Disseminating research on the web - This section looks at the benefits of disseminating research outputs on the internet, examines common concerns about doing so, looks at why academic work doesn't work on the web and suggests ways of presenting your research in a web-friendly way.
  • Practical hints about putting research online - This section looks at the practicalities of putting research outputs online successfully, including helping your users find your research, organising research on the page and an introduction to digital document formats.
  • The GDNet approach to research communication - This section outlines the GDNet approach and includes links to GDNet style guides and a downloadable PowerPoint presentation about communicating research online.
  • No website? Support for online dissemination for research - This section outlines how GDNet supports organisations with no websites to communicate their work online; it also provides pointers to external sites that can support research organisations to create a website."
