After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

Consultancy Services to Plan, Develop, Implement, Monitor National IEC / Communication Campaign for National Anti Malaria Progra

Summary

The Centre for Media Studies (CMS) has provided a study to plan, develop, implement and monitor a national information, education & communication (IEC) campaign for effectively communicating National Anti Malaria Programmes (NAMP) to a community in India. The project includes: formulation of a communication strategy; conducting pre and post test of IEC material; and carrying out an evaluation study. Commissioned by the Government of India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the goal is to formulate a communication strategy that includes a plan for social mobilisation/community participation.

CMS carried out a baseline survey on Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) to identify information gaps and needs, media habits/information sources,
preferences and communication needs of the community in eleven malaria prevalent states of India. The team enlisted potential non government organisations (NGOs) working in the health and education sector in selected, sampled states. A combined approach including quantitative information with qualitative research methodologies was used. It recommended measures to promote behavioral changes related to malaria.

Several of the key findings led to the conclusion that malaria is the most frequently suffered disease in the study areas. Respondent’s knowledge about malaria has been quite high in all the states and especially in urban clusters like Kolkata and Guwahati. Further, respondents in the study areas were not only aware of the main symptom of malaria - shivering - but also their knowledge was very high about other symptoms such as headache, hi-fever, profuse sweating with decrease in body temperature, vomiting, weakness etc. Mosquito bites were found to be the most common cause of spread of malaria. More than 90% of the respondents were well aware of the fact that malaria is curable if treated on time.

Television, Radio, Public announcements, Drama/Skits/Street Plays, Helplines/Hospitals were the most preferred sources through which the respondents would like to obtain information on malaria in future. These mediums may be used by CMC for an IEC intervention to address malaria.
