Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

14. OneWorld Learning Channel - a portal promoting quality education for all - includes news, opinions and analysis on education as a global issue and explores how education is linked with issues such as poverty, debt, gender, the environment, AIDS and health.

15. Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR) - independent educational charity. They produce weekly on-line reports and news analyses by local and international reporters from Central Asia, Afghanistan, the Balkans, and the Caucasus, and distribute news bulletins in five languages internationally.

16. Afghan Media Development - maintained by IWPR, this site serves as a clearing house for all information on media in Afghanistan and media development issues in that country.

17. Africa Pulse - a news and information portal for the civil society sector in the Southern African Development Community. Relies on a 'bottom-up' publishing structure, which means that organisations publish directly to the site.

18. Jerusalem Media and Communication Centre(JMCC) - established in 1988 by a group of Palestinian journalists and researchers to provide information on events in the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) and the Gaza Strip. JMCC's Jerusalem and Gaza offices provide a wide range of services to journalists, researchers, international agencies, individuals and organisations interested in obtaining reliable information on the Palestinian territory.

20. White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood - a group of organisations and individuals that have combined forces to raise international awareness about the need to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all women and infants.

21. Leadership for Environment and Development (LEAD) - an international network of professionals committed to sustainable development. Its aim is to create and sustain a global network of emerging and working leaders ready and willing to address environment and development challenges in different countries.

22. Linking Agricultural Research and Rural Radio - How can rural radio help to construct better relationships between technical science and humanity?

23. Directory of Development Organizations 2002 - lists 25,000 contacts of organisations that offer "(non-) financial support, market access, information and advice to the enterprise and poverty-reducing sectors in low-income countries." The Directory can be viewed in English, Spanish, or French.

New Technologies

24. Democracies Online - promoting online civic participation and democracy efforts around the world through information exchange, experience sharing, outreach, and education.

25. Digital Opportunity Channel - will focus on the use of ICTs for global sustainable development, with a special emphasis on developing countries. The site will be launched publicly the week of 17 May 2002 to coincide with UN World Telecommunications Day.

26. TakingITGlobal ICT Network - a network and site to enable young people from around the world to share their experiences with information and communications technologies (ICTs). Features news, people, events, organisations, and online discussions about closing the digital divide.
