Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Small Arms and Light Weapons Awareness Support Pack

SummaryText
The Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW) Awareness Support Pack (SASP) was first published in 2003 by the South Eastern and Eastern Europe Clearinghouse for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SEESAC) in consultation with a wide range of stakeholders working on small arms problems in South Eastern Europe. The support pack was developed to address low levels of knowledge, skills and resources available to undertake SALW Awareness. The first edition was revised, resulting in SASP 2. Consisting of a handbook and CD-ROM, the support pack set out the principles and procedures that have been identified as necessary for safe and effective SALW Awareness programming, and provides a collection of supporting materials. It has been designed for use by stakeholders preparing to develop or take part in SALW Awareness programmes, including members of civil society, national SALW authorities, international organisations, donors, or security/peace-keeping forces.

The SASP package includes an operational handbook with a set of logically structured guidelines for those conducting SALW Awareness programmes, illustrated with examples from the field. The CD-ROM contains supporting materials and publications, including:
