The Communication Initiative
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Research & Evaluation Tools from JHU/CCP

This series of more than 30 research tools has been developed by the Research & Evaluation (R&E) team at the USA-based Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs (JHU/CCP). Information is provided on each item in the series on the JHU/CCP website, including year of publication, relevant topics, countries of study, and details about how to get in touch with an R&E officer who can provide additional information.

Specifically, topics addressed by these studies include:
  • Health: for instance, immunisation, maternal and neonatal health; HIV/AIDS; fertility preferences; and knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to reproductive health and sexuality among youth
  • Political development/rights: for instance, democracy and governance, conflicts, perceived justice
  • Gender & youth (in the area of family planning)
JHU/CCP's R&E team uses several data collection approaches to inform programme activities and to evaluate their effectiveness. These approaches range from large population-based surveys to smaller, focused activities that collect in-depth information on a specific topic. These strategies are reflected in the tools offered here.
