Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Promotion of Immunisation in Uganda

A Booklet for Leaders
SummaryText

Because, as stated in the introduction to this Uganda National Expanded Program on Immunization (UNEPI) booklet, leaders played a big role in mobilising their communities for immunisation services in prior (1980's) immunisation campaigns in Uganda, high immunisation coverage was maintained until the mid-1990s. In an effort to reverse a decline in the late 1990's, the Ugandan Ministry of Health embarked on intensive community mobilisation to promote utilisation of immunisation services. This document seeks to prepare leaders to increase the rate of immunisation by providing them with information for mobilising their communities.

It includes the following sections:

  • Status of immunisation by district in 2001.
  • What is immunisation, its benefits, when it should be carried out, who should be immunised and how, why it is important, and a description of diseases against which children are immunised, including:
  1. Poliomyelitis (Polio)
  2. Tuberculosis (TB)
  3. Diphtheria
  4. Measles
  5. Tetanus
  6. Whooping Cough
  7. Hepatitis B (liver disease)
  8. Haemophilas influenza
  9. Type B illnesses (Meningitis and Pneumonia)

The booklet concludes with a summary of prime messages for mobilisation.
