Inter African Committee (IAC) Activity Report
SummaryText
The writers state that this report gives an account of the highlights of their collective work as an IAC family and its preparation has taken into account what could be achieved if the necessary resources, both human and material, could be pulled together. The publication includes a list of several activities undertaken that have resulted in notable conscience raising. Among these is the open condemnation of FGM by excisers in Guinea, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Mali, Senegal and their public support for its eradication.
The relevant legislative measures adopted in Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Egypt, Ghana, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Tanzania and Togo can be attributed to the sustained lobbying by IAC, its National Committees and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
IAC has been working on a Draft Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Harmful Traditional Practices Affecting the Fundamental Rights of Women and Girl Children. The negotiation with the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) regarding this process offers hope for the adoption of a regional instrument to protect girl children from this cruel practice.
