Facilitated by Irene Guevara Harris from South Africa, this workshop will review how well governments respond to the specific needs and vulnerabilities of women in the context of HIV/AIDS, the leading cause of death and disease in women of reproductive age in Sub-Saharan Africa. The session will showcase an independent rating initiative - The AIDS Accountability Scorecard on Women - which identifies gaps between stated commitments by governments and key actors, and their actual performance. In addition to holding governments accountable for their lack of action in the response to women, the tool is designed to stimulate dialogue on progress and "best practices". Joint accountability efforts and politically relevant advocacy tools for the fulfillment of commitments will be presented and discussed. Participants will also be invited to join the AIDS Accountability Forum, a global network of experts promoting increased accountability and a bolder leadership in the response to the epidemic.
