The Essential Field Guides to humanitarian and conflict zones (EFGs) are a series of handbooks for those seeking to grasp the context, understand a country or situation, and operate safely in dangerous and what are often constantly changing environments. The first in this series is The Essential Field Guide to Afghanistan, whose 4th fully revised edition was published in January 2014. The first edition of the guide was published in 1998 as an independent information resource for journalists, United Nations (UN) and non-governmental organisation (NGO) aid workers, donors, military, business professionals, and travellers, as well as relief workers.
The 4th edition offers a 3-decade perspective on what is happening in the country, with the intent to provide insights into political, humanitarian, reconstruction, military, cultural, health, agricultural, environmental, human rights, and other related issues through essays, information briefs, and data.
Sections include: street maps for major cities; advice on daily survival; contacts; a list of key Dari and Pashto phrases; and tips for travel.
