Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

1. The U.S. Agency for International Development, Population, Health and Nutrition Center's Users' Guide for 2000 is now available on the USAID/PHN external website. This publication includes descriptions of USAID's contractors in the PHN Sector as well as contact information for USAID staff both in Washington and in the field. 2. Sierra Leone's "Expo Times" is now on-line. It was forced to close over 2 yrs ago and most of its journalists fled in the wake of the military intervention by the Nigerian-led West African force, ECOMOG. 2 of the staff were detained for about a year and one of them died in mysterious circumstances while awaiting trial on treason charges. Resumed publication via a website on March 15, 2000 with help from the US-based Freedom Forum and the British newspaper, The Guardian. Includes news articles, features, editorials, community links, business links, and access to back issues. Website

3. "Action Monitoring for Effectiveness (aMe): Improving Water, Hygiene & Environmental Sanitation Programmes," by Kathleen Shordt - Focuses on practical methods to improve projects and programmes in the short term. Emphasizes use of monitoring information at the lowest level possible, with referral to other levels as needed. Describes how to organize and facilitate monitoring activities that are built into ongoing programmes. Part I describes the approach, emphasizing participation by those people who have a vested interest in 'getting it right' and solving problems and data collection methods, simple sampling and analysis. Part II contains 32 Fact Sheets, each of which provides practical examples of indicators, methods and tools for monitoring a specific topic. 4. "Conveying Concerns: Women Report on Gender-based Violence," produced by MEASURE Communication. The 3rd in a series compiled through the Women's Edition project. Contains a collection of articles and transcripts of broadcasts produced by women journalists in 7 countries. The stories highlight local efforts to promote recognition of violence against women as a societal problem - one that is linked to the social, economic, and psychological subordination of women worldwide.

5. "La Foto del Recuerdo (A Memory Snap)" - a video in Spanish to prevent pregnancy in adolescence produced by Yaocíhuatl A.C., a grassroots organization who produces materials to present several issues relevant to the lives of children and adolescents. The video is a trigger to be shown in educational contexts (secondary schools) and provoke discussion among youth.

9. "City of Shelter: A Coordinated Community Response to Domestic Violence" - an 8 hr video-based, domestic violence training series presented by Global Village Communications (GVC). Website

10. "No Paradise Yet: The World's Women Face the New Century," published for the Beijing +5 conference in NY, reveals a need to put women's reproductive health and rights into a wider social context. "Obesity and Poverty: a New Public Health Challenge" - examination of the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Latin America and Caribbean countries and in impoverished populations in developed countries. 13. "Growing Up Alone: HIV/AIDS a Global Emergency," a UNICEF campaign report, examines the impact of HIV/AIDS on children and their communities. "Programs That Deliver: Logistics' Contributions to Better Health in Developing Countries," outlines the lessons learned by the Family Planning Logistics Management (FPLM) project, a project that has worked since 1986 in approx. 40 countries in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Description of why health and family planning programmes need to deliver a reliable, continuous supply of contraceptives and essential products to customers. Provides a number of perspectives on the logistics management process, focusing chapters on the policymaker's role in improving and supporting the supply chain, the customer's point of view, and the needs and motivations of the people and organisations coordinating logistics systems. Women, Ink. was a project of the International Women's Tribune Centre (IWTC) that marketed and distributed books on women and development with a focus on the perspectives of women from the Global South. They provided a marketing outlet for publications produced by information-gathering groups and small presses in countries of the Global South on wide-ranging women's issues related to development.
