Development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

AMANI Early Childhood Development (AMANI E.C.D.)

This branch of the AMANI Trust Foundation works to support child-focused community development initiatives by building on the strengths of family and community knowledge, beliefs, and practices regarding sustainable human settlements. AMANI Early Childhood Development (AMANI E.C.D.) advocates for and facilitates integrated, multi-sectoral approaches for supporting women, families, care-givers, educators, and communities, in their roles of nurturing Tanzania's socially and economically disadvantaged young children 0 - 8 years. The goal is to ensure that all children have the opportunity to enter school healthy, happy, ready and able to develop to their full potential - and that schools are ready and able to support them.
Communication Strategies

AMANI works as an ECD resource organisation, facilitating partnerships for collaborative action to improve early childhood policies, programmes, and budgeting at all levels. Key strategies include:

  • Policy engagement and advocacy
  • Participatory research and documentation
  • Strengthening ECD capacity
  • Promoting ECD information, communication, and public awareness raising
  • Information sharing and networking

As of this writing, the AMANI team is engaged in the following programmes:

  1. ECD Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) in support of Tanzania's National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty (June 2006 - December 2008) - This activity centres around the attempt to meet the public demand for ECD IEC by strengthening the ECD IEC resource base through AMANI's local senior management team and programme staff. AMANI will continue to produce and disseminate visual and print resource materials for different groups, ranging from community members to senior government officials. In addition, during this time period, AMANI has been mobilising the initial phase of its research, analysis, and documentation programme, which is designed to contribute to evidence-based ECD advocacy and to strategically inform policy development and planning processes.
  2. ECD Partners Tanzania: Strengthening ECD Partnership in Tanzania (June 2007 - March 2009) - AMANI is engaged in ECD policy, planning, and resource allocation at local and national levels. Objectives of the 5-year plan include: timely and relevant information sharing and networking; participatory situation analysis on ECD; participatory stakeholder analysis; Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) analysis of ECD Partners Tanzania; and development of a strategic plan and funding proposal.
