Development action with informed and engaged societies
As of March 15 2025, The Communication Initiative (The CI) platform is operating at a reduced level, with no new content being posted to the global website and registration/login functions disabled. (La Iniciativa de Comunicación, or CILA, will keep running.) While many interactive functions are no longer available, The CI platform remains open for public use, with all content accessible and searchable until the end of 2025.

Please note that some links within our knowledge summaries may be broken due to changes in external websites. The denial of access to the USAID website has, for instance, left many links broken. We can only hope that these valuable resources will be made available again soon. In the meantime, our summaries may help you by gleaning key insights from those resources.

A heartfelt thank you to our network for your support and the invaluable work you do.

Art for Social Change Project

The Macedonian non-governmental organisation (NGO) called NGO Art Studio has developed an Art for Social Change Project which uses the universal language of art to help bridge cultural differences by teaching young people to see the value in diversity. This intercultural initiative is designed to rally youth with a common interest in European Union (EU) integration, strengthening their bonds of friendship and promoting their moral and intellectual development. The goal is to build youth capacity to lead arts-based public awareness efforts that promote cross-cultural understanding and minimise cultural barriers.
Communication Strategies

Art here is used as the basis for coalition building and connection across communities. The creation of visual art - especially traditional art - is conceived of as a strategy for: repairing cultural isolation, increasing participation in the media, inspiring creative responses to current political issues, and promoting the strengthening of intercultural competence and collaboration across borders as anchors for community renewal and economic development. Youth participation in this process is central, and is based on the premise that young people tend to be naturally idealistic and creative - with the potential to improve the structure of civic society in Macedonia by using art to manage conflicts and differences.

Concretely, NGO Art Studio draws centrally on face-to-face encounters to foster youth creativity and leadership in addressing real-life issues such as discrimination. Working at the community level, Art for Social Change hosts workshops in an effort to help young people apply the traditional artistic styles of their native country - such as Byzantine art (icons) - to graphic arts and contemporary arts, creating works that are designed to preserve and expand culture. They will then share these creations with those from very different backgrounds and contexts. For instance, in honour of the International Day of Peace (September 21) 2006, NGO Art Studio opened an art exhibition titled "The Power of Culture" which featured works by 12 Macedonian artists and a group of graphic novelists from England. And in 2007, NGO Art Studio attended an interactive arts event at the ARX Art Centre in Finland that brought together young people from Macedonia and Finland to learn both from each other and from older, more experienced artists from around the world.
